01Origins

In 1958, psychologist W. K. Kirchner devised this paradigm while studying how long people of different ages could hold onto rapidly changing information. Half a century on, it is one of the most widely used tasks for measuring working memory.

Around 2003, Jaeggi and colleagues raised the difficulty with a dual N-Back — and in doing so lit a famous debate over whether working-memory training can raise intelligence.

02How it works

A continuous stream of stimuli arrives — letters, digits, or block positions. Your job: press a key whenever the current item matches the one from N steps earlier.

N is how many steps you look back. 1-Back compares with the previous item, 2-Back with the one two back, and so on — the larger the N, the more you must hold at once. Dual N-Back goes further, presenting two independent streams (say, visual position plus an audio letter) to be monitored in parallel.

03What it measures

At its core, N-Back taxes the updating function of working memory. Once N≥2, merely holding recent items isn't enough — with every new stimulus you must refresh the buffer: drop what's stale, take in what's new, and keep their order. It tests maintenance, manipulation and attentional control at once, not just capacity.

04Where the brain works

Owen et al. (2005) pooled 24 neuroimaging studies and found N-Back reliably engages a fronto-parietal network: dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, frontal poles, dorsal cingulate and pre-supplementary motor area, and medial and lateral posterior parietal cortex. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is regarded as the hub for updating and manipulation.

05Key findings — an unsettled debate

In 2008, Jaeggi et al. reported that training the dual N-Back could transfer to fluid intelligence, the more training the greater the gain — a claim still debated today.

Meta-analyses in favor (Au et al., 2015) judge the effect small but real, on the order of three or four IQ points; meta-analyses against (Melby-Lervåg & Hulme, 2013, 2016) argue the gains are mostly near transfer — you improve at what you practice — with no reliable far transfer to general intelligence.

We'll say it plainly: N-Back is solid as a measure of working memory, but as a shortcut to being "smarter" the science is unsettled. We use it to train attention and working memory steadily — not to promise a leap in IQ.

06Where it's used

N-Back is a standard paradigm for assessing working memory in cognitive neuroscience and the clinic — across attention deficits, depression, schizophrenia, cognitive aging and rehabilitation — and often serves as a load "probe" in imaging and pharmacology studies.
