01Origins

In 1935, American psychologist John Ridley Stroop (1897–1973) first systematically demonstrated and quantified an interference effect — now known simply by his name. It is among the most replicated and cited experiments in the history of psychology.

02How it works

You're shown color words in three conditions: word and ink congruent ("red" in red), incongruent ("red" in blue), or neutral (a colored patch). The instruction is simple: name the ink color, ignore what the word says.

The result is a telling asymmetry: naming the color is strongly slowed by the word's meaning, yet reading the word is barely disturbed by the ink. For literate readers, reading has simply become too automatic.

03What it measures

The Stroop task indexes selective attention and inhibitory control: can you focus on the target dimension (color) and suppress the more automatic, more dominant response (reading)? It is treated as a gold standard for cognitive interference and executive control.

04Where the brain works

Functional imaging shows the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) monitors conflict — lighting up when word and color clash — while the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) implements control, biasing attention toward task-relevant information. Incongruent trials raise activity in the dorsal ACC and pre-supplementary motor area.

05Key findings

The Stroop interference equals the reaction time on incongruent trials minus that on congruent (or neutral) trials. Incongruent trials are slower and more error-prone.

Most profoundly, the interference is hard to eliminate no matter how you try — direct evidence that some human information processing is automatic, not fully under voluntary control.

06Where it's used

The Stroop task is widely used to assess attention and executive control, appearing in clinical screening for attention deficits, schizophrenia, depression, dementia and brain injury. It has spawned many variants, including the emotional Stroop (emotional words slow naming, and anxious or depressed individuals are especially sensitive to negative ones), spatial Stroop and numerical Stroop.
